Theatre Procedures and Day Surgery

A standard theatre fee applies for each theatre episode of care. This payment does not go to the doctor; it contributes towards the costs of consumables, sterilization, nurse, room and utilities required for your procedure. Non-Molechecks patients will be charged an additional gap fee on procedures.

Bedford Day Surgery is an accredited Day Surgery facility. With your consent, eligible procedures will be billed through your private health fund. In this case, if your excess is <$250 you will receive a refund of the theatre fee paid on the day of your procedure.

Please ask one of our reception staff for more details.

Additional Costs

  • When a histopathology specimen is sent off for diagnosis, it is possible that you may receive a small account from the histopathology company. This is usually between $15 - $30, the amount varying depending on how many samples are sent, and what the specimens are.
  • Medicare pay General Practitioners 85% of the Medicare Schedule Fees for theatre procedures. Unless a patient has been through Molechecks, the 15% will be billed to the patient. The billing for  procedures is determined by the histopathology results, therefore this gap cannot be calculated on the day of surgery. As mentioned above, the amount of gap payable depends on how many specimens are sent off, and the outcome of the results that are generated.

Please see our Post-Operative Care Information Sheet for post-operative advice.

New patients booked directly into theatre

If you are a new patient who has been referred to Bedford for a procedure, time will be allocated in your appointment for the doctor to meet you, assess your needs, make recommendations, and then carry out the procedure should you wish to proceed. You will be billed for a consultation, a theatre fee, and any fees related to the procedure.
